What is Traditional Thai Massage?

The history of Thai massage is one that reaches back over 2,500 years to when a man named Shivago Komarpaj devised the ancient healing art while serving as the Buddha’s personal physician. Although Thai massage has drawn on influences from throughout Southeast Asia, it is Komarpaj who is personally acknowledged for sowing the seeds of the art.

Sadly, much of the Thai massage history was lost in the wake of a 1767 attack by the Burmese in Ayutthaya. Fortunately, however, some of the history was inscribed in the ancient Sala Moh Nuat massage pavilion in Bangkok. Despite being more than 2,500 years, it was not until the 20th century when Thai massage would become a world-renowned treatment for physical healing.

Restoring Energy Flow

The Thai art is one of the least invasive health treatments in the world. Your skin does not have to be exposed to any oils, unless desired, and there is no need to remove any clothing. Another contrast to conventional massage therapy is that specific muscles are not directly rubbed. Instead, the unique style of Thai massage is one that treats the body through gentle compression, pulling, rocking, and finally stretching.

Thai massage centres upon a philosophy where the flow of energy is restored throughout the body in order to improve health and relieve pain. To make this possible, a Thai masseuse will release blockages in energy channels that are known as Sen. Thai massages are found to be smooth and wonderfully seamless.

Thais have long been aware that muscular and skeletal issues are often caused when muscles become shorter following repeated exposure to strain. And because stretching represents the final portion of a Thai massage treatment, this is crucial as it stretches the shortening muscles beyond what is possible with isolated exercises like yoga. Thai massage can restore muscles back to their regular length and thus improve mobility.
